Pulpit Rock: A Classic, Easy Kootenay Hike

Almost any Nelson local has completed the hike to Pulpit Rock. And, there’s a reason its locals hike it multiple times and recommend it to anyone who has yet to do the hike: The views are amazing for such a short climb.

The trailhead is down Johnson St. just across the big orange bridge from Nelson. This is a very popular hike in the area, so depending on what time you plan on hiking, the parking lot may be full. There is additional parking lot a little further down the road, but even this spot can fill up.

The trail climbs steadily the whole way up for 1.8km. The round-trip distance in approximately 3.6km. On the way up you’ll gain approximately 300m elevation.

The trail is maintained and in great condition. There are even wooden stairs installed in several parts.

Lots of the trek up is quite rocky. It’s still an easy climb, just don’t come down too fast around the corners.

There are also many trails that seem to branch off, but the main path is always obvious.

The hike can be done within an hour if you’re in a rush, but typically, it takes around 1.5 hours to hike to the viewpoint and back.

If you’re ever in Nelson for even just half a day, see if you can squeeze in a trip up Pulpit Rock. It’s probably one of the most well-known trails in the Kootenays, but there’s a reason for it.
